The Science of Reading and Handwriting: How Print and Cursive Drive Brain Development and Literacy

When we write by hand, we become stronger readers, better writers, and retain far more of what we learn.

When researchers set out to compare typing versus handwriting, the scientific verdict was clear: writing by hand is superior for deep learning and retention. Have you ever typed pages of notes on a laptop, only to realize you barely remember a single point? Or noticed how processing heavy emotions feels far more grounding when you journal on paper rather than typing into a screen?

That’s because handwriting isn't just a mechanical motor skill—it’s a powerful cognitive engine that fuels literacy, memory, and self-expression. When children put pen to paper, their brains activate complex neural networks that link physical hand movements directly to visual letter recognition, spelling retention, and reading comprehension (Berninger, 2012; James et al., 2016; Van Cleave, n.d.).

 

Handwriting Needs to Be Automatic

As much as we’d like to believe we can multitask, our brains can really only focus on one conscious task at a time (Graham, 2009–2010; Van Cleave, n.d.). If a student is spending all their mental energy figuring out how to form a single letter—“Okay, I start at the top, go down, now lift the pencil and cross in the middle... yay, I made a 't'! Now, how do I start an 'e'?” - their working memory quickly overloads (Graham, 2009–2010).

When letter formation takes that much effort, there is simply no cognitive space left for higher-level writing skills (Graham, 2009–2010; Van Cleave, n.d.). Planning, generating vocabulary, and organizing ideas all get pushed aside just to get strokes on paper (Graham, 2009–2010; Van Cleave, n.d.). Because human working memory is limited, slow or effortful handwriting creates a severe cognitive roadblock to learning (Graham, 2009–2010; Van Cleave, n.d.).

That is where automaticity comes in. Automatic handwriting means you can write without having to consciously think about how to form the letters (Graham, 2009–2010; Van Cleave, n.d.). Think of everyday tasks like tying your shoes, or background functions your brain controls does like breathing and blinking; once a skill becomes automatic, your subconscious brain handles it seamlessly so your conscious mind is free to focus on other cognitive tasks (Graham, 2009–2010; Van Cleave, n.d.).

Once pencil strokes run quietly in the subconscious background, working memory opens up completely, allowing students to comprehend what they read, retain key details while taking notes, and bring their best thoughts to life on paper (Berninger, 2012; Graham, 2009–2010; Mueller & Oppenheimer, 2014; Van Cleave, n.d.).

 

Why Teach Print (Manuscript) Formation?

Before diving into cursive, explicit instruction in traditional manuscript (writing printed letters) builds an essential bridge between motor skills and early reading development (Graham, 2009–2010; Van Cleave, n.d.). Here is why print formation is so critical:

  • Strengthens Reading Connections: Learning to form manuscript letters directly mirrors the printed typography children encounter in books, accelerating visual letter recognition and early reading fluency (Berninger et al., 2016; Graham, 2009–2010; Van Cleave, n.d.).

  • Builds Foundational Motor Pathways: Early print instruction teaches crucial stroke orientation, spatial awareness, and line alignment, directly mapping the visual shape of a letter into motor memory (Berninger & Graham, 1998; Graham, 2009–2010).

  • Leverages Prior Knowledge: Most children enter school with basic exposure to print letters from home or preschool, making traditional manuscript a smooth, natural starting point for formal instruction (Graham, 2009–2010).

Bringing Print Instruction to Life

In the video below I walk through our classroom-tested “Sky Grass Dirt” handwriting whiteboard to show how color-coded lines, starting dots, and stroke-based letter families (like the "c family") make explicit handwriting instruction simple and student independent practice possible (Graham, 2009–2010; Van Cleave, n.d.).

Why Teach Cursive?

When we write by hand, we process and retain far more information—and cursive provides the fastest, most efficient path to getting those thoughts onto paper (Berninger, 2012; King, 2015; Mueller & Oppenheimer, 2014; Van Cleave, n.d.). The famous research showing a dramatic advantage for handwritten notes over typing was actually conducted in 2014 by Pam Mueller of Princeton University and Daniel Oppenheimer of UCLA. Their study compared students taking notes by hand versus on laptops andfound thathandwritten note-takers processed information far more deeply, synthesized concepts better, and scored significantly higher on conceptual test questions (Mueller & Oppenheimer, 2014). Whether utilizing structured systems like two-column Cornell notes or traditional outlining, writing longhand forces the brain to engage more cognitive resources and analyze ideas in real time rather than mindlessly transcribing by typing on our laptops (Mueller & Oppenheimer, 2014).

Because cursive connects letters seamlessly, it drastically cuts down on pencil lifts compared to print (King, 2015; Van Cleave, n.d.). Take the word "then": printing it requires lifting your pencil off the paper 5 separate times, whereas cursive connects the word in a single fluid stroke with only 2 lifts—the second being to cross the t (Van Cleave, n.d.). Because print is slower and more fragmented, cursive allows students to capture far more content during note-taking before their thoughts slip away (Freedman, 2005; King, 2015; Van Cleave, n.d.). This is why I am a huge proponent of every student learning cursive, and all notes in classrooms (including at the collegiate level) being taken by hand in cursive.

Writing in Cursive:

  • Dramatically Increases Speed and Flow: Cursive treats whole words as continuous motor movements rather than isolated letter strokes, allowing students to keep pace with fast-moving lectures and internal thought processes (Gladstone, as cited in Freedman, 2005; King, 2015; Van Cleave, n.d.).

  • Eliminates Reversals and Spacing Confusion: Because every lowercase cursive letter starts on the baseline and connects continuously to the next, cursive naturally prevents common letter reversals (such as b and d) and clearly defines word boundaries (King, 2015; Van Cleave, n.d.).

  • Supports Struggling Learners and Students with Dyslexia: Cursive’s fluid, connected motion provides rich kinesthetic feedback that helps dysgraphic and dyslexic students lock in spelling patterns and strengthen orthographic memory (King, 2015; Van Cleave, n.d.).

  • Unlocks Historical and Personal Literacy: Mastering cursive grants students the ability to read historical primary sources in their original script—like the Declaration of Independence - and write an authentic personal signature (King, 2015).

Direct, explicit instruction in both print and cursive equips students with the automaticity needed to express their ideas freely (Graham, 2009–2010; Van Cleave, n.d.). The act of writing by hand remains one of our most potent engines for lifelong learning and cognitive growth (Berninger, 2012; King, 2015; Mueller & Oppenheimer, 2014; Van Cleave, n.d.).

 

So - now that we know better, let’s do better!
