The Roots of Structured Literacy training empowers educators with the knowledge and skills needed to teach all students how to read and write. Learn how to design and deliver lessons for a whole class, small group, and/or individual student grounded in the science of reading and evidence-based structured literacy practices.
For K-6 classroom teachers and K-12 special educators, MLL teachers, reading specialists, interventionists, & tutors.
Participants select one of two learning pathways:

Six units of study and 72 hours of in-person learning are delivered in two sections. Graduates will be prepared to take the KPEERI exam.

Course Overview
Section 1
Unit 1: The Science of Reading
This course builds the foundation and sets the purpose for the work. Learn about current approaches to literacy and their historical contexts, how the brain learns to read, and neurological learning differences including dyslexia and developmental language disorder.
Unit 2: Assessment & Instruction
Understand the differences among and purposes for screening, progress-monitoring, diagnostic, and outcome assessments. Learn about the components of structured literacy instruction, and how to utilize assessment measures to understand students' learning profiles and instructional needs.
Unit 3: Word Recognition & Spelling
This course focuses on phonology, phonics, decoding, and encoding. Concepts covered include:
- Roles of oral language and phonemic awareness
- 44 phonemes of the English language
- Administering and interpreting diagnostic assessments
- Alphabet knowledge & letter formation
- Spelling rules & generalizations
- Purpose & use of text types for beginning readers
Section 2
Unit 4: Fluency
Learn why fluency is the bridge from word recognition to comprehension, how to assess students' reading fluency, and develop routines and structures to build students' fluency and motivation to read.
Unit 5: Vocabulary & Morphology
Understand the role of oral language within written language. Learn how to teach the most common prefixes, suffixes, and base morphemes. Build structures and routines to teach academic and content-specific vocabulary both directly and indirectly.
Unit 6: Language Comprehension & Writing
Understand language comprehension practices that contribute to deep comprehension. Learn how to create and deliver pre-, during-, post- cognitive comprehension strategies to help students construct meaning and self-monitor for comprehension as they read.

Course Pricing
Sections 1 and 2 per-person rate: $2,500 ($2,200 + $300 for cost of materials). 5% off for schools enrolling five or more educators.
Onsite, private cohort training available for schools in need of training for 15-20 educators.

Practicum
Overview
Continue to learn and grow with other educators, under the guidance of a literacy coach, as you implement evidence-based literacy practices in your instructional setting. This cohort-style practicum consists of both in-person and virtual sessions from September to May, tailored to meet your personal goals.
The coach will model and then guide you to:
- Administer assessments
- Analyze data
- Form instructional goals
- Design lessons
- Deliver instruction
